Taxotere vs AC Chemotherapy

I have locally advanced breast cancer & am receiving chemo before surgery (mastectomy). My regime is 4 ac & 4 taxotere. I just finished my 4 ac (yay!)... I hear that taxotere does not have as severe side effects...

My white blood counts have been so low that I have been hospitalized twice even though I am receiving iv hydration for 5 days at home after chemo as well as neupogen (sp?) shots for 7 days.

Can anyone share their experience, tips, advise? (I heard to put ice on your finger and toe nails during the treatment)

I had more trouble with Taxotere then with the AC chemo. I would get extreme inflammation throughout my upper back/neck & shoulders (like a really bad flu). I also got joint pain in my knees and some numbness in my feet. I used accupunture after every treatment to relieve my symptoms; worked great for me and meant that the numbness/joint pain didn't last long after the 4 treatments were completed.

Sorry, I should add that I didn't have any trouble with low blood counts on Neupogen.

thx for the acupuncture tip! how many days after chemo did ur pain start? and how many days after chemo did you do the acupuncture & how many times after each chemo treatment?

I had severe stomach issues on ac in addition to the white blood cell problem. I hear that taxotere is easier on the stomach... bad mouth sores too :(

Did you use tylenol or any other meds from the Dr for the inflammation?

Going back to work so hoping it is not too bad for me..

I was really lucky with the AC portion. Except for the hair loss I didn't really have many side effects. Which was great because I was pregnant.

My eldest daughter was in school Tues/Thurs so my taxol treatments were on Thursdays. I was good until about Sunday afternoon when the affects of Dex would wear off. Sunday night & Monday were really bad. My accupuncture treatments were first thing Tuesday morning after school drop off. I would have done it on Mondays except that my oldest wouldn't have sat still for long enough. I only needed 1 treatment after each Taxol.

I also couldnt' take any anti-inflammatories because I was on blood thinners and you can't mix the 2.

I used Melaleuca toothpaste & mouthwash (not alcohol based) to avoid mouth sores and it worked throughout for me.
