I just wanted to add a comment here about opting for or against a mastectomy.
I have had both breasts removed. My choice. I was diagnosed as MULTI-FOCAL. I had 3 unrelated tumours visable in ultrasound and subsequent quadrectomy. I was told that although my margins were clear, the risk was high for another tumour to form with a dx of "multi-focal". I opted for a full mastectomy prior to the start of chemo (and chemo within 6 weeks of my first quadrectomy) and they found another 1.5cm tumour in the upper quadrant that had been undetected...(hence the later decision following all treatments to remove the other side...which visable lump ended up being benign..). I'm very happy and rest easy with my choice.
On the negative side is the lack of sensation at all in the area of surgery. I have no feeling in my "new reconstructed" breasts. I have to be cautious about banging them or having any injury that I can't feel. There also is the loss of sexual pleasure in this area.
Again...due to my dx...I'm extremely pleased with my decision of 3 years ago and never regret it. But there are positives and negatives you need to weigh when you make your informed decision.
