New diagnosed with DCIS - waiting for surgeon's call

Hi
I was diagnosed with DCIS Jan 11 and my surgery is scheduled for March 24. While it is stage 0 cancer, I have nuclear grade 3 cells. From what I understand that means likely to grow faster and likely to spread.
I have read and heard much about DCIS. Some say it not really cancer and I should do nothing and wait and see.
When I met with the surgeon he strongly recommended mastectomy. (I had expected lumpectomy) He was concerned because I also had nipple leakage and the DCIS is not near that spot. He was great and drew diagrams and explained fully. He said he would consult with the pathologist. I am waiting for his call.
I'm having mixed feelings. At first I was thinking I was lucky it was insitu and "just take it off" and was being very positive about it all.
I suppose I have to go through some sort of mourning for the loss of a breast but so far I haven't even shed a tear, and that is odd. I'm sort of numb. I feel like I don't have the right to be too upset over this. If it's not really considered cancer by some. But on the other hand, it it's not really cancer, then why the heck am I scheduled for a mastectomy.
I'm in Ottawa, and have received a lot of information from the Women's Breast health clinic. Have signed up for a pre op info session.
Anyone out there with DCIS that can share some experiences with me?

We have a information package at Princess Margaret Hospital for women with DCIS if you email us at caringvoices@uhn.on.ca I will be happy to email you a copy of our brochure for women with DCIS. Thanks Scott. Yes the Ottawa clinic has been wonderful. I have received valuable information, resources and support.
I am 3 weeks post surgery and am very greatful that the DCIS has been removed and that I have almost eliminated any chance of re-occurence.
