I found a lump on my right breat in July,2011 and had surgery Aug. I was told the if it wasn't present in my lymph nodes that i would just have to do radiation. But now with the new test results I have been told that I have to do chemo as well and they have already scheduled me for chemo next Friday, however, i have not said yes yet. I am afraid to do chemo because i feel that it will be worse for me down the road. Is there anyone else who refused to do chemo and just have radiation and tamoxifin?

Hello confused! I am so glad you have reached out for support from Caring Voices.
Scott Secord here from Princess Margaret, Manager of the Clinical Survivorship Program. The confusion is common especially at the time of sorting out your pathology and treatment. Often due to tests and pathology the recommended treatment options change. Oncotype Dx testing is to determine if chemotherapy will be of benefit in reducing your risk of future recurrence.
Your confusion and hesitation is understandable. Many survivors go through this. Clinically most patients tolerate their treatments including chemotherapy better now particularly with the use of side effect medications. Its still your choice regarding treatments.
I would contact your nurse/oncologist and ask them explain better the benefits of taking versus not taking your chemo. You want to be as informed as possible as to this when agreeing to your treatments. They are there to help you with your decision. I encourage you to be as active as possible in communicating with your team. www.willow.org has a telephone support service as well sometimes it just helps to talk to someone who has been there.
Generally the goal of all treatments are to reduce the risk of recurrence for you as much as possible to extend your life long survival. I hope you find my comments helpful! Scott
