HRT

Just got back from the osteoporosis clinic today. 33 years old, one year out of treatment for cervical cancer. My bones are showing risk factors for osteoporosis but the doctors don't quite know what to do with me as I fall outside of their normal population. Too soon and too young for FOSAMAX. Not at risk for fractures. Their best advice is go on HRT for my bones. My oncologists don't see why I wouldn't be on HRT for the menopause. They keep using the term "acceptable risk" which, quite frankly, irritates me. As it is me taking the risk and I find it unacceptable. The idea of undergoing cancer treatment AGAIN becasue of HRT is really unacceptable. So my question is, are all you gals on HRT for the menopause and what do you think?

I've been on HRT for 9 years now. I'm 37 and I feel perfectly normal. I had a bone density scan about 3 years ago, and everything was fine. I can understand having concerns about HRT, but the way I look at it, I'm young, and there are plenty of worse things out there that can give me another kind of cancer.

i also have been diagnosed with cervical cancer, I havent started treatment yet but its gonna be chemo and rads plus brachytherapy... I tried to ask my doctor about the brachy but she says dont worry about that now.... And. Ive been worrying about it since they mentioned it to me- i wanted to talk about options or if they offer outpatient brachy for cervical cancer, but she just kept saying dont worry about that now. How can I not worry about that if I dont even know My options? She explained brachy as being a week vacay with a nice view from my window, and I know thats not all it involves and now I am even more worried about it since I couldnt seem to get any discussion about it with my doc...
Can anyone tell me a bit about what the brachytherapy involves, and what it is like to actually go through it as a patient? ive read alot online about it but I cant seem to find alot about patient experience, which I feel I might be able to get a better idea of what its like, since my doc tells me only that its an easy vacay....

Hi Ladies.

Treatment is so tailored for each patient. This is a routine issue in my work with cancer patients. Sometime what is called adjuvant treatment (HRT) or Osteo prevention treatments are all targeted at reducing your risk of recurrence or length of cancer free survival or treating your other risk factors generated as a result of their cancer treatments. They have some scientific and rigorous evidence based research to guide them in helping with that process. For most women who have had chemo, HRT and age factors all lead to the need for a clear option for additional treatments. We are fortunate to have a Bone Health Program for Breast Cancer at Women's College Hospital which is trying to learn better how to manage risk factors like bone health. We try to encourage women who meet this risk profile to at minimum have a baseline BMD done to help monitor and decide if additional treatments or surveillance is needed. It would be good to have a clear discussion with your oncologist and your family doctor about having this issue clearly discussed as part of your disease management and long term wellness. I will be planning a Chat on this topic and many others in the fall. It would be good to hear from you and for you to connect with each other on this important issue.

My name is Sue and I am a social worker working in the survivorship clinic.
It sounds like you are going through a lot and have a lot of tough decisions to make
Perhaps your doctor is wanting you to focus on the chemotherapy and is indicating there is lots of time to discuss the bracytherapy. It sounds like she or he want to discuss this with you but would like you to focus on getting through your next course of treatment. How do you feel about focusing on what lies ahead and waiting until later to discuss it? How do you feel knowing right now might help you? What have you learned about the treatment so far?
Worrying is a funny thing. We do it because we don't know things and in an effort to try to gain back some of the control that issues such as a cancer diagnosis and treatment have brought forth to us. It also serves as a distraction to other things that are going on. It must be hard not to have all the answers now. I don't think I hear your doctor saying that you won't talk about it but I think I hear your doctor saying, let's talk about this but not now. Let's talk about it closer to when it is going to happen.
It must be hard not to worry and not feel like you have all the answers. It sounds like you will. Just keep talking to her or him about your treatment. Do you live close by? Are you coming to Princess Margaret for your treatments? There are several wonderful education classes that you can attend that you may find helpful as well. You can find them on our calender at www. survivorship.ca
There are chemotherapy questions and concern classes. There is also an online or in class session on Radiation therapy. There are also 4 days of the week you can access talking to Dr. Buckman and other patients and survivors.
Keep talking to your doctor. She or he will start to talk to you about this therapy when the time is right.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can do.
